SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
Black History Month is an official celebration to recognize and honor the significant contributions, achievements, and history of African Americans and communities while encouraging reflection on the necessity of confronting the ongoing challenges of systemic racism and inequality. In February 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” African American people, both native and migrant, fight every day for equal rights, citizenship, and the protection of the right to vote for all amidst a lack of representation in leadership roles and longstanding discrimination.
This year’s theme, "African American and Labor" focuses on the various and profound ways that work and working of all kinds - free and unfree, skilled, and unskilled, vocational and voluntary - intersect with the collective experiences of Black people.
