SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Inn uprising in Manhattan, New York. These riots propelled the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and other identities (LGBTQ+) movement to a nationwide scale. The movement advocates for equity, legal protections, and the right to expression without discrimination. More information can be accessed on ’Historys Column on The Stonewall Riots <https://www.history.com/topics/gay-rights/the-stonewall-riots>. To Learn more about identities within the LGBTQ+ community, please visit New York’s Gay Center website <https://gaycenter.org/about/lgbtq/>.
The first Pride event was held on June 28, 1970, to commemorate the uprisings’ one year anniversary. This event came to be known as Christopher Street Liberation Day. This year, President Joe Biden issued a proclamation on the 70th anniversary of the Lavender Scare <https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2023/04/26/a-proclamation-on-the-70th-anniversary-of-the-lavender-scare/> and on Transgender Day of Visibility <https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2023/03/30/a-proclamation-on-transgender-day-of-visibility/>, recognizing the resilience and achievements of the LGTBQ+ community amidst systemic oppression and erasure. This year’s Pride month theme is “Strength in Solidarity,” bringing attention to the hundreds of legislative bills proposed against LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms and the importance of building coalitions and allyship when taking a stance against hatred and bigotry.
