SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
The Community Members’ Police Academy is the main program developed by the Erie Police Department to meet one of its primary goals of enhancing partnerships by engaging with community members through education and community outreach events.
The academy was designed to provide a medium for community members to understand why police do the things they do, encourage community members to become active in volunteering to help police their own neighborhoods, and to heighten ownership in the Erie Police Department. The academy runs for nine weeks on an annual basis at which attendees graduate and are invited back to participate in the following year’s academy as role-players.
Academy attendees learn about different topics such as: Miranda rights, code of ethics, building searches, TI Simulator (shoot-don’t-shoot scenarios), criminal law and civil liberties, restorative justice and the courts, officer survival, investigation techniques, SWAT, less-lethal, community policing, vehicle stops, and DUI investigations.
