SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

In 2020 the Town of Erie Board of Trustees and staff held Community Conversations to raise awareness on topics such as diversity and unconscious bias, and had attempted to coordinate conversations that would incorporate both Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) and St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) to discuss bullying.

In an effort to continue these conversations, Alicia Graves, a member of Erie’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Advisory Board (DEIAB), proposed a speaker series for talking to children about race. This series would be hosted by Dr. Rosemarie Allen, an associate professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver and presented in a coordinated effort with SVVSD and BVSD. Dr. Allen recently spoke to the Wheat Ridge City Council and is part of a conversation series hosted by the Colorado Humanities this month. More information on Dr. Allen can be found by visiting her website <https://www.rosemarieallen.com/biography--dr.-rosemarie-allen.html> and viewing the following videos:

Fiscal Impact:

The estimated cost of the speaker series is still to be negotiated, but with this resolution staff is requesting the Board approve $10,000 towards this effort. Alicia Graves has secured a commitment of $7,000 from SVVSD, and we are working to secure a similar commitment from BVSD for an additional $7,000.
