SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

On June 11th, the Town hosted “Community Conversations: George Floyd’s death and a call to action”. As a result of that meeting, the Board of Trustees committed to forming a Community Task Force to review the Erie Police Department’s Directives and Protocols (the operational level policies approved by the Police Chief to guide the Department’s staff in their work). The main focus of the Task Force is to review Erie Police Directives and Protocols, attend regular meetings and to report to the Board of Trustees once per quarter until work is completed.

 

On June 26th the Town started advertising via social media posts on Facebook as well as on the Town’s employment page seeking volunteers for the Task Force. The announcement closed on July 10th. Seventy qualified Erie residents over the age of 18 applied and applications were reviewed and ranked by a three-person screening committee composed of Erie resident and Building Better Neighbors member Justin Brooks, Town of Erie Trustee Sara Loflin, and Town of Erie Human Resources Director Alicia Melendez. This committee recommended to the Board of Trustees the committee’s top 12 candidates along with all 70 applications. 

 

During the Board of Trustees’ July 28 meeting, the Board clarified that to ensure there are opportunities for as many residents as possible on Town advisory boards, commissions, and task forces, and to be consistent with past practice, the Board wanted to limit appointees to the Task Force to those who do not already serving on another Town advisory group. To address this issue, the Board agreed it would review all applications, submit their top 9 candidates to the Town Clerk by Tuesday, August 4th, and have the Town Clerk compile and inform the Board of the results so the Board could make appointments to the Task Force during the Board’s August 11th meeting.
