SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

The Town of Erie has a very unique single track bike trail system on the Sunset East Open Space. This popular amenity so close to the heart of Town has experienced increased usage since its creation, resulting parking concerns near the site. Currently, users accessing the site frequently park on land not owned by the Town. To mitigate this issue, staff is proposing to design and construct a parking lot/trail head that would be accessible from Weld County Road 6.

The parking lot/trail head would be designed to fit into the natural surroundings and disturb less than one acre, accommodate 25-30 vehicles, provide space for trailer parking and maintain appropriate turning radiuses for vehicles loaded with bikes. Construction would be completed using a recycled asphalt for the base with concrete edging, include perimeter fencing (split rail or similar), signage and dryland landscaping.

Staff is currently working on the initial design phase and would hope to begin construction in late summer. To reduce the overall cost this would be a joint project of the Public Works and Parks & Recreation Department's staff and equipment to perform initial grading of the site and materials hauling. The asphalt for the project would come be recycled from asphalt that is scheduled to be removed from the Leon A Wurl service center back yard.

Below is an estimated project budget:
