SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
The 2017 Water Fund Capital Budget includes purchasing a valve exercising trailer.
The standard LX VMT valve exercising trailer includes a small tank for vacuum operations and allows a single operator to exercise water valves. Currently this task is completed by hand, with a minimum of two operators. The valve exercising trailer also has a 500 CFM - 11in Hg vacuum with a 250 gallon tank for spoils, 3000 psi pressure washer with a 95gal water tank for wash down.
Benefits of valve exercising trailer include:
• The machine turns the valves automatically without requiring the operator to manually turn the valve themself; the operator sets it to start and the machine operates the valve no matter how hard it is to turn or how many turns is required to open and close;
• When the crew pulls up to the valve and the valve has rock, mud, debris, etc, this equipment will enable the crew to vacuum the debris out and operate the valve all at once;
• The crew can collect GPS information for exact valve location, which improves the mapping along with collecting data such as how many turns it takes to open and close the valve;
• The water system has both right-handed and left-handed turn valves. The machine will automatically detect the direction and adjust accordingly;
• With valves in the street, the machine is large enough to act as a good physical buffer from traffic which offers protection for the crew;
• Using the machine to operate valves decreases potential injuries to the operators.
