SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
This summer the Parks and Open Space Division of the Parks & Recreation Department was the beneficiary of work completed by the Boulder County Youth Corps through a grant from Great Outdoors Colorado. The work completed included:
* 647 hours of work along the Coal Creek Trail corridor
o Noxious weed control - hand work pulling thistles
o Trail repair on sections south of Vista Parkway - work on crusher fines
o Removed rail tie steps at new trail head parking lot off Erie Parkway and revegetated are with native grass seed
o Trail rules and regulation signs installed along trail between Erie Parkway and Highway 7
* 600 hours of other tasks
o Irrigation and crusher fine spreading at the Boneyard
o Pier staining at Erie Lake and Thomas Reservoir
o Nuisance tree ditch clearing
o Single track trail building - Sunset Open Space
o Mulch/beautification of landscaping at Erie Community Center and Erie Community Park
In addition to completing work tasks, Parks staff was responsible for an educational component for the 14 to 18 year olds. Some of the education sessions were hands on while others were safety or environmental lessons. Topics covered included:
* Field safety
* Stream ecology
* Weather safety
* Wildlife corridors
* Field demonstrations
o Correct tree planting
o Water hydraulics
o Single track bike trail construction
o Seed bed preparation
o Drip irrigation basics
