BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom following the Emancipation Proclamation. Recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth honors freedom, resilience, and the continued pursuit of equity, inclusion, and justice within communities across the nation.
