SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
Mount Pleasant Cemetery is one of the oldest prairie cemeteries in the State of Colorado that is still operational. Mount Pleasant Cemetery has been utilized since the 1860s. The St. Louis & Denver Land & Mining Company deeded the Cemetery to the Town of Erie in 1881. In 1967, 274 unmarked graves were counted in the Cemetery.
There has been a long-standing need to effectively and accurately map the cemetery. This need is compounded by missing cemetery records from the 1950s due to a fire. Additionally, staff intends to engage consultants to develop a cemetery master plan in 2020. To effectively plan for Mount Pleasant Cemetery’s future, it is necessary to understand what is actually on site. Ground-penetrating radar technology will enable the Town to complete this task cost effectively and provide critical information needed for long-term planning, historic preservation, and a cemetery survey.
Budget line item 100-50-850-520100-000000 has $11,000 of funds for the ground-penetrating radar mapping of the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The total cost of ground-penetrating radar mapping is $19,489 with an appropriation of $8,489.
