SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

This presentation is intended to provide the Town Council background and information about the Town’s water rights and facilities. It will introduce Colorado water law and a review of the Town’s current and future water resources needed to provide reliable and safe drinking water for the Town.

The Town is in an excellent position to meet current and future water needs. It has worked diligently in its planning for water rights and facilities acquisitions for many years. The Town is meeting all current water demands with an extensive water rights portfolio and water system. It is actively pursuing a large new water project and participating in two regional projects to meet future water demands. In addition, the Town continues to analyze potential water resource alternatives.

The Town maximizes the use of its water resources through efficient use and re-use of its water. Unlike many municipalities, it has not needed to dry up any agricultural lands to provide water to its residents. Erie’s water projects also fall within the goals of the recently updated State Water Plan and the Town’s State-approved Water Conservation Plan.

The presentation is intended to be an overview, and additional study sessions can be scheduled to discuss individual water projects and water rights.
