Body
SUMMARY/KEY POINTS
• This item requires Council approval due to the cost of the construction contract.
• Trail connections in the Sunset Area are a high priority for the community.
• Approving the construction contract will allow construction to begin in a timely manner.
BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
Parks & Recreation developed a plan for the Sunset area to address needs for trail connections, parking lot improvements, and additional amenities in the area. The Sunset area encompasses the Erie Singletrack Trails, the Sunset West Multiuse Trails and connections to the Sunset and Erie Highlands subdivisions to the north, the Westerly subdivision to the east, and Coal Creek Regional Trail to the west. While the Erie Singletrack and Sunset West Multiuse Trails provide excellent singletrack trail opportunities, multi-use trail connectivity is lacking in the area. The Sunset Area Plan is intended to be implemented in phases and provide trail connections for trail users of all types and abilities.
Phase 1 includes approximately ½ mile of 10-foot-wide concrete trail connecting Weld County Road 5 to the Sunset West Trails along the Weld County Road 6 corridor. The trail will link to the Sunset subdivision to the north via Weld County Road 5, with a designated crossing provided to reach the existing trails in the Westerly subdivision. Future phases will extend multi-use connectivity to the Coal Creek Regional Trail and additional trail segments within the Sunset subdivision. As trail use in the area continues to grow, the Town will also explore expanding and enhancing amenities at the Erie Singletrack.
