SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

The Parks & Open Space (P&OS) Division of the Parks & Recreation Department oversees the procurement and maintenance of parks and open space identification signage across all Town-maintained parks and open areas. While recent years saw consistent updates to identification signage in the Town's open space properties, the park signage has weathered over time, necessitating refurbishment. Exposure to Colorado's intense sun has accelerated this weathering, resulting in degradation such as fading decals, deteriorating caps, rusting back paneling, and paint chipping. Quotes for refurbishing the signs have been returned with costs amounting to upwards of 70% of the original installation expenses, rendering the current situation unsustainable.

In response, the P&OS Division collaborated with Broomfield Sign Company to design new park signage for all Town-maintained parks for easy identification. The design prioritizes ease of ongoing maintenance to combat weathering and potential vandalism and ensures consistency and recognizability across Town parks. The design incorporates distinct elements to effectively differentiate between park and open space amenities and is in keeping with the existing themes found in the Town of Erie Parks & Trail Sign Program manual. Additionally, the new signs will display addresses, facilitating navigation for visitors and providing essential information for emergency services when necessary.

Fiscal Impact: This project was submitted as a capital improvement project during the 2023 budgeting process and was formally approved in the 2024 budget, with a budget allocation of $200,000. Broomfield Sign Company was selected as the project vendor through a formal RFP process.
