SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:

Women’s History Month began in 1981 when Congress requested President Reagan proclaim the week of March 7 as “Women’s History Week.” Five years later, Congress designated the month of March as “Women’s History Month” and continued to add resolutions to support yearly proclamations until 1994. Since 1995, presidents have designated March as Women’s History Month in the United States, celebrating, and recognizing the contributions and achievements of women in science, leadership, history, politics, and all other facets of human life. More information can be accessed on the Women’s History Month website: <https://womenshistorymonth.gov/about/>.

The Town recognizes the year-round efforts of women across Erie who work tirelessly to better our community every day. We recognize the wisdom and leadership of all women in our workforce and thank them for their mission to bring joy and excellence to public service. Through their efforts, the Town’s Women’s Group has been nationally recognized for the opportunities it provides to all women employees, increasing their professional development, interpersonal growth, and creating a stronger sense of belonging.

Each year, Women’s History Month organizers select a theme. The theme for 2024 is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.” The theme was selected by the Women’s History Alliance and recognizes women who are “committed to eliminating bias and discrimination from our society and institutions.”
