SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND OF SUBJECT MATTER:
The Town of Erie's Sustainability Division has prepared an application for a United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART Small-Scale Water Efficiency Grant. The grant would fund the Leon A. Wurl Service Center Turf Replacement Project. The Turf Replacement initiative aims to address water management challenges exacerbated by climate change and Colorado's susceptibility to droughts. The project entails replacing the LAWSC's current lawn landscape with drought-resistant plants, low-water-use grass varieties, and diverse mulch types.
Staff plans to install a drip irrigation system equipped with meters to monitor water usage and study the needs of the newly selected plant species. Anticipated benefits include a significant reduction in water consumption and establishing a model landscape to both educate and inspire residents to adopt water-wise practices. These efforts align with the Town's 2021 Water Efficiency Plan, which promotes irrigation efficiency and landscaping on Town parks and facilities. The overall project will help create a sustainable, water-efficient community while mitigating the impact of climate change.
